What happened this week is a good question but a better one
is what didn't happen this week? So many things always happen during a
missionary's week, but this week in particular felt unusually jam packed with
things.
With all the climate changes, because Sonors doesn't pick a
climate durign this time of year it just goes from burning hot to really cold
in 20 minutes, both Hermana Rubio and I got sick this week and it is never fun
to be sick as a missionary. The good thing was, that while we were out of the
house working and on the Lord's errand, we were more or less fine; however, the
second we got back to the house and every single morning, we felt awful again.
Small blessings that go a very long way.
Another highlight of this week was pssibly one fo the most
crazy things that has happened on my mission so far. We were teaching a less
active sister who had been less active for almsot thirty years and we were
having a really awesome lesson about the purpose of our life on Earth and how
Christ paid for more than our sins when he took upon himself the pains of the
world. He took upon himself all of our afflictions, sicknesses, weakness, etc. And
as we were sharing and discussing Alma 7:11, this sister began to just sob and
told us several of the difficult things that have passed in her life, and then
began to cry harder and harder until she became more or less overcome with
emotion and passed out. I accidentally made someone pass out. Thankfully, we
were able to get her to come to, and got her in a car and to the doctor and
also thankfully some of the elders were able to come running to give her a
blessing and I mean literally runnign becasue they ended up beign on the other
side fo the area when we called them but they're super awesome so they came as
fast as they could and were able to give her one of the sweetest blessings. And
after that, she was okay again, and everybody calmed down but not going to lie,
one of the scariest moemnts of my mission so far.
But the awesome thing about this sweet, wonderful sister, is
that she came to church this week and partook of the scrament for the first
time in 30 years! And we were priviledged to surrepticiosuly watch her as she
did this and it was one of the sweetest feelings I have had in these past few
months is to watch as this sister renewed her covenants and made steps to leave
all of the pain she had suffered behind. It was just so awesome to watch the
healing power of the Son of God at work and such a powerful testinoy of how
important the sacramwent ordinance really is.
On a funny note, we also taught an epic lesson to two eight
year olds - one the daughter of less active member who wnats to be baptized and
her friend - complete with horribly drawn dry erase board drawings and it was
the best as we taught them about the Plan of Salvation, and watched as hope lit
up their faces as they realized they would see their families again. Also,
super awesome becasue to some point it was like teaching the entire block,
becasue they liked to yell the answers to our questions and then give us the
summary of the lesson in pretty much the loudest voice possible, and therefore
I am pretty sure at the very least their neighbors now have basically recieved
all the doctrine of where we go after this life.
Fun fact - we had an awesome district activity today where
we went to the Plaza in Cocorit, and then became friends with and started
teaching some giant iguanas and some monkeys. The lizards are pretty receptive
but the monkeys didn't really want to learn anything.
Con mi amor eterno,
Hermana Rawlings
